Immunisations

This practice follows the national policy for all immunisations.
Please read the NHS Vaccination Information and NHS Vaccination Schedule for further information.

Baby Immunisation Clinics

Child immunisation clinics are held by the Practice Nurses every week.

Why vaccinations are important

All children are checked regularly during their first five years of life. This will be done by the Health Visitor. You will either be contacted by the health visitor or sent an appointment to attend at the surgery.

HPV Vaccination – Protection against Cervical Cancer

Since 2008, the UK has incorporated HPV vaccination into the schedule for girls aged 12 to 13, and boys of the same age, since September 2019. The vast majority of cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV types 16 and 18) and the introduction of the vaccine has led to a significant fall in the incidence of cervical cancer diagnosis amongst people who have completed the full HPV vaccination programme.

Shingles

Please see this NHS.uk page to see if you are entitled to the Shingles vaccination.

Influenza

Annual protection against influenza is offered to senior citizens and those at high risk, e.g., with chronic heart, chest, some breathing disorders, and diabetes.

Tetanus and Polio

Protection against tetanus and polio should be kept up to date. A full primary course with a booster at 15 should be followed by at least two boosters at 10 year intervals to protect throughout life.

Travel Vaccine Information

Please see:

Attached Services

Community Midwives

The Community Midwife is responsible for antenatal and early postnatal care. She has a weekly clinic where she works in close co-operation with the doctors and the local maternity units.

Community Nurses

The District Nurse Team provide nursing care to patients in their home and gives practical advice or assistance to patients, relatives and carers coping with illness at home.

Health Visitors

Our Health Visitor is concerned with the health of the whole community, but especially the under 5s. She visits all new babies and their mothers after the first week of life. Her aim is the promotion of health and early detection of ill health. She visits families regularly to discuss health and care of mothers and their children.

Coil & Implanon Fitting

These services are available at the surgery. Ladies considering a coil need to see their own GP initially to confirm suitability. It is then important to have some routine swabs 2 weeks before the fitting.

Minor Surgery & Joint Injections

The surgery has a well equipped treatment room and some of the partners are trained in a range of minor surgical & joint injection procedures. Dermatology and musculoskeletal medicine are two other areas where some partners have either had hospital training or in the process of developing a special interest in. Appointments for a minor operation/joint injection should only be made after an initial consultation with one of the doctors.

Hypertension Management

Our nurses regularly monitor patients with hypertension.  These appointments are designed to support those patients whose blood pressure is poorly controlled, providing comprehensive screening, advice and relevant medication.

Asthmatic Patients

We have trained asthma nurses who review our patients. Regular monitoring of asthmatics is recommended and you are advised to keep your regular appointments.

Childrens’ Blood Tests

If a child under 16 years old requires a blood test they can go to The Butterfly Room at the Southampton General Hospital, which run a walk-in service from Monday – Friday 9.00am to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 4.00pm.  If a child needs to fast for their blood test they can arrive at 8.15am. (Please ensure you take the blood test form with you).
